Luna Lean Polson Gambrell is the fourth-oldest child.
Next to be brought into the family was a fourth daughter: Luna Lean Polson Gambrell (July 16th, 1908 – June 4th, 1990). Like most of the oldest siblings, she grew up on the Polsons’ farm in rural Jones County before moving with the family into the Laurel city limits. However, her story diverges from her older sisters beyond this point, for by the 1930, she is still living with her parents and siblings under the same roof at 214 North 14th Avenue, still unmarried. She is the oldest sibling still in the house at this time, and like her father and some younger siblings, she works at a cotton mill. Her specific task there is as a weaver. The highest level of education she attained was at the seventh grade level. In Spring of 1935, Luna is announced to be the next hostess for a meeting of the Wide Awake Club in Laurel, a job which she would share with younger sister Ernestine.
Luna would nevertheless marry, doing so sometime in the late 1930s to Wiley Fanzo Gambrell (December 12th, 1911 – March 15th, 2002). Wiley had been born in Collins, Mississippi, and grew up in Jones County. By 1930, he worked like his father at one of Jones County’s many sawmills. Wiley had come to Laurel by 1935.
By 1940, Luna and Wiley lived at 507 North 14th Avenue, Wiley a boilermaker at the Laurel Machine and Foundry. Luna stayed at home, caring for their first child, Martha, a daughter born in approximately 1939. Wiley also registered for the Draft on October 16th, 1940. They continued to live at the same address in 1941. However, by 1953, they are listed as residents of Ellisville.
Later in life, the couple moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, settling in the town of Gautier. At the latest, they arrived in the town by 1988, at the time of Maude’s death. While living in Gautier, Luna and Wiley were members of the Cambridge Baptist Church, and Maude continued to be a homemaker. Luna would die before her husband in June 1990, while in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, at the age of eighty-one. Her remains were returned to Laurel and buried there in Hickory Grove Cemetery.
Wiley would remain a widower for the rest of his life, staying in Gautier at 760 Susan Circle. He eventually passed away in the spring of 2002, and he was buried next to Luna in Hickory Grove Cemetery.
