Post-War
After Robert came home, he continued to reside as one of the last siblings in his mother’s home in Laurel. By 1950, this was at 103 South 14th Avenue, and Robert provided for the household as a board maker at a board mill. However, on December 1st of the same year, he married Tommie Nell Munn Polson (June 5th, 1930 – July 29th, 2015), originally from Newton County, Mississippi.
The couple raised three boys together: David Polson, James Ray Polson (May 10th, 1954 – October 14th, 2020), and John Polson. Tommie and Robert were members of West Laurel Baptist Church, up the street from their home down the road. From this home, Tommie cared for numerous children through her own home-based childcare.
Unfortunately, Robert was widowed after sixty-five years of marriage in 2015, when Tommie died peacefully at the Care Center of Laurel. She is buried at Hickory Grove Cemetery, where Robert has a headstone prepared next to her. Since then, their son John continues to care for Robert.
To this day, Robert remains strong and appears time-to-time at veterans events. He is ninety-seven years-old and counting.
